Direct speech is a sentence spoken directly by the
speaker.
Indirect speech is
a sentence which is a speaker's speech which is then delivered by a second
party to a third people.
1. Direct Speech
There are two types
of direct speech reporting verbs and reported words. Reporting verbs are verbs
that tell or report something. While reported words are words that are notified.
Example : My aunt said, "The garden needs to be
watered"
Explanation :
My aunt said as Reporting Verb
“The garden needs to be watered” as Reported words
Explanation :
- Reported words do not always have to be put in the
beginning of a sentence, can also be at the end of the sentence
Example : “Let’s go swimming,” she said.
- If the subject is pronounced, such as he, she, it and
others, then placed after reported words
Example : ”I have to go home now,” he said.
- If the subject is a proper noun then put at the end of
the sentence
Example : “I have a meeting at ten o’clock today,”
said Wendy.
2. Indirect Speech
Example :
-Anna says, “I don’t like meat.” (Direct Speech)
Anna said that she doesn’t like meat (Indirect
Speech)
-Brenda says, “I will go to New Zealand next month,”
(Direct Speech)
Brenda said that she will go to New Zealand next
month. (Indirect Speech)
